Medical Students Advocate for Higher Annual Loan Limits

September 19, 2003 - Members of the AAMC's Organization of Student Representatives (OSR) Administrative Board went to Capitol Hill Sept. 15 to urge their Members of Congress to support efforts to increase the annual borrowing limit on subsidized Stafford student loans as part of the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act. Legislative authorization of the Higher Education Act expires on Sept. 30 and Congress is currently in the process of developing legislative reauthorization proposals. Currently, qualified graduate and professional students may borrow up to $8,500 per year in subsidized loans through the Stafford loan program. The students advocated raising the annual limit to $12,000 per year, a level that approximately covers inflation since the limits were last increased during the 1992 reauthorization.
