GAO Releases Report on Rising
Malpractice Premiums
August 1, 2003 - The General Accounting Office (GAO)
July 28 released a report (GAO-03-702)
that identifies "losses on medical malpractice claims"
as the primary force behind the recent and dramatic increases
in malpractice insurance premiums. The report does not call
for congressional action at this time; however, it suggests
to Congress that any policy changes should incorporate state-
and incident-specific data from state insurance regulators
and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.
