NCRR Advisory Council Discusses NIH "Road Map"

May 23, 2003 - The Advisory Council to the National Center on Research Resources (NCRR) met on May 15, and received a presentation by Lana Skirboll, Ph.D., NIH Associate Director for Science Policy, on the development of the NIH research "road map." The planning effort launched by NIH Director Elias Zerhouni, M.D., has engaged extensive discussion among researchers to identify long-range goal setting and priorities for making NIH more effective. The road map process has focused on three themes: new pathways to discovery, research teams of the future, and re-engineering the clinical research enterprise. Deliberation on these themes will be subject to 16 working groups dedicated to such topics as structural biology, bioinformatics, translational research (including infrastructure and resources), clinical research workforce training, and ensuring public trust in medical research. The Advisory Council also heard presentations on leading research in proteomics, NIH guidance on implementation of privacy regulations in research, and the activities of Research Subject Advocates supported within the network of General Clinical Research Centers.

The May 15 council meeting coincided with NCRR's deadline for receipt of public comments to assist updating of NCRR's strategic plan for 2004-2008. The AAMC submitted comments jointly with the Association of American Universities (AAU) and the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges (NASULGC), underscoring the importance of NCRR's programs in providing research infrastructure and identifying strategies for addressing critical research needs.
