HHS Announces Guidelines For Bioterrorism Funding

May 16, 2003 - HHS May 2 released guidelines for the department's $1.4 billion bioterrorism cooperative agreement program to help state and local governments upgrade public health infrastructure and health care systems to better prepare for and respond to bioterrorism and other public health emergencies. The program includes $498 million for the National Bioterrorism Hospital Preparedness Program, administered by HRSA. The HRSA guidelines outline six priority areas: governance, regional surge capacity to handle terrorism victims, emergency medical services, hospital linkages to public health departments, education and preparedness training, and terrorism preparedness exercises.
