AAMC Participates in Health
Professions Capitol Hill Day
May 16, 2003 - More than a dozen leaders from various
health professions disciplines visited 20 Congressional offices
on May 15 to advocate for increased funding for the Title
VII and VIII health professions programs. Ronald D. Franks,
M.D., vice president for health affairs and dean of the East
Tennessee State University James H. Quillen College of Medicine,
represented the AAMC during the Health Professions Leadership
Capitol Hill Day, which was sponsored by the Health Professions
and Nursing Education Coalition (HPNEC).
Hill Day participants visited Members of Congress to urge
that funding be restored to the programs, which the Administration's
FY 2004 budget proposes to cut by 74 percent. The event also
included a breakfast briefing that featured presentations
by Charles Dujon, legislative assistant to Rep. Jesse Jackson,
Jr., (D-Ill.), and John Myers, legislative assistant to Senator
Arlen Specter (R-Pa.). HPNEC is an alliance of nearly 50 organizations
representing a variety of providers, institutions, and community
partnerships dedicated to educating the nation's health care
personnel.
