State Smallpox Funds Announced

May 9, 2003 - The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) May 5 announced that it will release $100 million to the states to help them better prepare for a possible smallpox attack and strengthen the public health infrastructure. The funds, administered by the Centers and Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), will be made available immediately and are in addition to the $1.4 billion awarded to the states in FY 2003 for bioterrorism preparedness. This funding was included as part of the smallpox legislation approved by Congress last month [see Washington Highlights, April 18].
