Groups Urge Increased Health
Funding
May 2, 2003 - The AAMC joined more than 220 other
health organizations in an April 28 letter
to Congress urging the "highest possible allocation"
for the Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations Subcommittees.
The letter, which was organized by the Coalition for Health
Funding, was sent to the chairs and ranking members of the
House and Senate Appropriations Committees with copies to
the congressional leadership.
The letter states, "[T]he activities and programs supported
by the U.S. Public Health Service are essential to protect
the health of the American people, whether from newly emerging
diseases such as SARS or the consequences of terrorist attacks.
These activities encompass a connected continuum where biomedical,
behavioral and health services research guides community-based
prevention, health promotion and treatment strategies. These
strategies are, in turn, carried out through targeted services
to medically underserved and high risk populations and provided
by a trained health and public health workforce. Each link
in the continuum cannot succeed in its vital contribution
without strong support from all of the other elements. The
public health continuum as a whole cannot succeed in achieving
the goal of improved health outcomes for all Americans without
strong, sustained resources."
The House and Senate Appropriations Committee are expected
to determine the allocations or spending limits for the 13
subcommittees within the next few weeks.
