House Members Express Concern Over Potential Medicaid Cuts

April 11, 2003 - Expressing their opposition to the inclusion of Medicaid cuts in the final FY 2004 budget resolution, a group of Republicans and Democrats sent letters April 4 and April 7, respectively, to the budget conferees. Both letters explain the importance of Medicaid as a safety net that ensures access to critical health and long term care. The letters also refer to the current fiscal challenges faced by states.

The Republican letter, sponsored by Rep. Peter King (N.Y.), was signed by 35 other Republican representatives: Reynolds (N.Y.), Sweeney (N.Y.), McHugh (N.Y.), Duncan (Tenn.), Boehlert (N.Y.), Radonovich (Calif.), Bono (Calif.), LoBiondo (N.J.), Hayes (N.C.), Burns (Ga.), Kelly (N.Y.), Weller (Ill.), English (Pa.), Lewis (Calif.), Leach (Iowa), Wamp (Tenn.), Weldon (Pa.), Burr (N.C.), Renzi (Ariz.), Gingrey (Ga.), Boozman (Ark.), LaHood (Ill.), Platts (Pa.), Murphy (Pa.), Quinn (N.Y.), Castle (Del.), Houghton (N.Y.), Isakson (Ga.), Gallegly (Calf.), Ramstad (Minn.), Janklow (S.D.), Biggert (Ill.), Johnson (Ill.), Peterson (Pa.) and Gerlach (Pa.).

The Democrats' letter (PDF, 12 pages - 2.5MB) was sponsored by Reps. John Dingell (Mich.), Sherrod Brown (Ohio) and Henry Waxman (Calif.) and signed by 190 Democrat representatives.
