House Members Express Concern
Over Potential Medicaid Cuts
April 11, 2003 - Expressing their opposition to the
inclusion of Medicaid cuts in the final FY 2004 budget resolution,
a group of Republicans and Democrats sent letters April 4
and April 7, respectively, to the budget conferees. The spending
reductions have not been included in the final version (see
related article.)
Both letters explain the importance of Medicaid as a safety
net that ensures access to critical health and long term care.
The letters also refer to the current fiscal challenges faced
by states.
The Republican letter, sponsored by Rep. Peter King (N.Y.),
was signed by 35 other Republican representatives: Reynolds
(N.Y.), Sweeney (N.Y.), McHugh (N.Y.), Duncan (Tenn.), Boehlert
(N.Y.), Radonovich (Calif.), Bono (Calif.), LoBiondo (N.J.),
Hayes (N.C.), Burns (Ga.), Kelly (N.Y.), Weller (Ill.), English
(Pa.), Lewis (Calif.), Leach (Iowa), Wamp (Tenn.), Weldon
(Pa.), Burr (N.C.), Renzi (Ariz.), Gingrey (Ga.), Boozman
(Ark.), LaHood (Ill.), Platts (Pa.), Murphy (Pa.), Quinn (N.Y.),
Castle (Del.), Houghton (N.Y.), Isakson (Ga.), Gallegly (Calf.),
Ramstad (Minn.), Janklow (S.D.), Biggert (Ill.), Johnson (Ill.),
Peterson (Pa.) and Gerlach (Pa.).
The Democrats' letter
(PDF, 12 pages - 2.5MB) was sponsored by Reps. John
Dingell (Mich.), Sherrod Brown (Ohio) and Henry Waxman (Calif.)
and signed by 190 Democrat representatives.
