NIH Announces FY 2003 NRSA Stipend Levels

March 14, 2003 - The National Institutes of Health (NIH) March 8 released the FY 2003 stipend levels for predoctoral trainees and postdoctoral fellows receiving Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Awards (NRSA) program (NOT-OD-03-033). The published levels for predoctoral trainees and for postdoctoral fellows (with zero years of experience) are $19,968 and $34,200, respectively. Both stipend levels reflect a 10 percent increase from FY 2002 levels. The percent change from FY 2002 to FY 2003 for a postdoctoral fellow with one year of experience also increases 10 percent, but this rate of increase declines with increasing years of postdoctoral experience. Congress has recommended increasing NRSA stipend levels by 10 percent in report language accompanying each of the last two fiscal years' appropriations bills. The new guidelines are effective for awards made on or after Oct. 1, 2002. The new FY 2003 stipend levels are slightly higher than the FY 2004 levels proposed by the President in his recent budget request, which were based on lower FY 2003 estimates.

The following table compares the Kirschstein NRSA stipend levels between FY 2002 and FY 2003:
