Senate Sets Appropriations Subcommittee Assignments

March 7, 2003 - Senate Appropriations Chairman Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) and Ranking Member Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.) March 4 announced subcommittee assignments for the 108th Congress. They also announced the creation of a new Homeland Security Subcommittee and the merger of the Transportation and Treasury-General Government Subcommittees.

Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) joins the Labor-HHS-Education Subcommittee, which loses Senator Byrd. Senators Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas) and Harry Reid (D-Nevada) join the VA-HUD Subcommittee, which loses Senators Herb Kohl (D-Wis.) and Ernest Hollings (D-S.C.).

The new Homeland Security Subcommittee will be chaired by Senator Thad Cochran (R-Miss.). Other Republicans on the subcommittee will be Senators Stevens, Arlen Specter (Pa.), Pete Domenici (N.M.), Mitch McConnell (Ky.), Shelby, Judd Gregg (N.H.), Ben "Nighthorse" Campbell (Colo.) and Larry Craig (Idaho). Democrats on the panel will be Byrd, Daniel Inouye (Hawaii), Hollings, Patrick Leahy (Vt.), Tom Harkin (Iowa), Barbara Mikulski (Md.), Kohl, and Patty Murray (Wash.).

Senator Robert Bennett (R-Utah) succeeds Senator Cochran as chair of the Agriculture Subcommittee.
