Secretary Thompson Outlines FY 2004 Priorities

February 28, 2003 - During a Feb. 26 House Budget Committee hearing on the Administration's FY 2004 Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) budget proposal, HHS Secretary Tommy Thompson identified some of his priorities for the coming year. His first priority was to work with Congress to develop a plan to cover the uninsured. Secretary Thompson also hoped to redirect a portion of fraud and abuse funding to providers who purchased technology that reduced medical errors and improved the quality of patient care. Included among his other priorities were medical liability reform and a new process to select Medicare contractors.

The Feb. 26 hearing was one of several this week to focus on the Bush budget proposal. Thompson has placed particular emphasis on outlining the Administration's new state option for Medicaid financing and explaining their opposition to temporary increases in the Federal Medical Assistance Percentage (the federal "Medicaid match").
