Commerce Committee Passes Bill to Create Reporting System for Medical Errors

February 21, 2003 - The House Energy and Commerce Committee Feb. 12 unanimously passed the "Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Act" (H.R. 663), which would create a voluntary and confidential medical errors reporting system. The medical errors information would be stored in a national database for use in patient safety and quality improvement research. The Committee passed similar legislation last year, but could not achieve a legislative compromise with the Ways and Means Committee, which had also passed a patient safety bill.
