New NIDA Director Named

January 24, 2003 - NIH Director Elias Zerhouni, M.D., Jan. 23 announced the appointment of Nora Volkow, M.D., as Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). Dr. Volkow currently serves as Associate Director for Life Sciences, Director of Nuclear Medicine, and Director of the NIDA-DOE Regional Neuroimaging Center at Brookhaven National Laboratory. She also holds positions as Professor of Psychiatry and Associate Dean for the Medical School at SUNY-Stony Brook. Dr. Volkow received her M.D. from the National University of Mexico and postdoctoral training in psychiatry at New York University. She officially will join NIDA on April 15, replacing Glen Hanson, D.D.S., Ph.D., who has served as Acting Director of since December 2001.
