White House Advisor Likely to Head CBO

January 17, 2003 - The House Budget Committee will vote the week of Jan. 27 to confirm Douglas Holtz-Eakin as director of the Congressional Budget Office (CBO). Currently the top economist for the White House Council of Economic Advisors, Holtz-Eakin is expected to win approval easily, despite reservations held by some Democrats who are concerned about his ability to be non-partisan.

The CBO scores federal legislation and advises Congress on the state of the economy. The House and Senate Budget Committees alternate selection of the CBO director, who serves four-year terms. Holtz-Eakin, an economics professor on leave from Syracuse University, is expected to receive final approval later this month from the Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) and the president pro-tempore of the Senate Ted Stevens (R-Alaska).
