108th Congress Committee Memberships Begin to Take Shape

January 10, 2003 - As the 108th Congress convened the week of Jan. 6, several new members were named to the committees of interest to medical schools and teaching hospitals. In the Senate, Republicans named four new members of the Finance Committee: Bill Frist (R-Tenn.), Rick Santorum (R-Pa.), Jim Bunning (R-Ky.), and Gordon Smith (R-Ore.). Sen. Sam Brownback (R-Kans.) was named to the Appropriations Committee.

In the House, Republicans filled five slots on the Appropriations Committee with Reps. Dave Weldon (R-Fla.), Ander Crenshaw (R-Fla.), Mike Simpson (R-Idaho), Mark Kirk (R-Ill.), and John Culberson (R-Texas). Additionally, Republicans named Mike Ferguson (R-N.J.) to the Energy and Commerce Committee and Eric Cantor (R-Va.) to the Ways and Means Committee. Democrats named Max Sandlin (D-Texas) and Stephanie Tubbs Jones (D-Ohio) to the Ways and Means Committee, and Sanford Bishop (D-Ga.) and Marion Berry (D-Ark.) to the Appropriations Committee. Additional committee members will be named soon.
