VA Names New Research Chief
December 6, 2002 - The Department of Veterans Affairs
(VA) Dec. 4 announced the appointment of Nelda P. Wray, M.D.,
as the VA's new Chief Research and Development Officer. Currently
chief of general medicine at the Houston VA medical center
and professor and chief of health sciences research at the
Baylor College of Medicine, Dr. Wray takes over for John Feussner,
M.D., who retired from the VA in August to take a position
as chief of medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina.
Dr. Wray received her medical degree from the Baylor College
of Medicine and created the Houston Center for Quality of
Care and Utilization Studies. Her recent research showed that
patients with osteoarthritis of the knee were just as likely
to experience pain after placebo arthroscopic surgery as those
that received real surgery.
The current Acting Chief Research and Development Officer,
James Burris, M.D., was named chief consultant for geriatrics.
Dr. Burris has served as the deputy chief research and development
at the VA since 1997. Dr. Burris received his medical degree
from the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University
and completed residencies at Roosevelt Hospital in New York
City and Georgetown University. He also serves as clinical
professor of medicine and pharmacology at Georgetown.
