NIH Extends Deadline for Loan Repayment Programs

December 6, 2002 - NIH has extended the application deadline for its loan repayment programs for clinical researchers and pediatric researchers until Jan. 31, 2003. These programs provide for the repayment of educational loan debt of qualified health professionals who agree to conduct research for at least two years, including repayment of up to $35,000 of the principal and interest of their educational loans. The 2003 programs differ from the 2002 programs in that the awards are no longer restricted to NIH grantees. Applicants must receive research support from a non-profit institution, non-profit foundation, non-profit professional association, or U.S. government entity (federal, state, or local) and meet other eligibility requirements. NIH's loan repayment programs were enacted by Congress to encourage physicians and other qualified health professionals in pursuing research careers and we urge interested individuals to contact the NIH for more details. The application deadline for a similar program in contraception and infertility research has also been extended.
