Congress Holds Leadership Elections

November 15, 2002 - There were no surprises when the Republicans and Democrats in the House and Senate met to select their leaders for the 108th Congress, which will convene in January. Senate Republicans selected Trent Lott (R-Miss.) to serve as Majority Leader and Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) to serve as Majority Whip. McConnell takes over the number two slot for Senate Republicans from Don Nickles (R-Okla.), who was term limited. However, Nickles will play a major role in the new Congress as Chair of the Senate Budget Committee.

Senate Democrats kept their leadership team in place, with Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) as Minority Leader and Harry Reid (D-Nev.) as Minority Whip.

In the House, Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) was re-elected to serve as Speaker. As expected, Tom DeLay (R-Texas) moves up from the Whip position to replace Dick Armey (R-Texas), who retired, as Majority Leader. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) was selected to take DeLay's place as Majority Whip. House Democrats selected Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) as Minority Leader, replacing Richard Gephardt (D-Mo.), who resigned the position after the Nov. 5 election. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) was picked to replace Pelosi as Minority Whip.
