CMS Delays Payment Rule for Physicians

November 1, 2002-Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Administrator Tom Scully Oct. 31 announced that "significant problems" with anesthesia codes have caused CMS to have a likely delay in the scheduled Nov. 1 publication of the final payment rule for physicians. Administrator Scully said he expected the coding problem to be straightened out in a few days or at least by Dec. 1, in time for the final rule to be in place by Jan. 1. Mr. Scully also indicated that CMS will work with the physician community to make appropriate announcements about the final rule delay and its subsequent publication and deadline requirements for physicians to indicate their participation status in the Medicare program.
