AAMC Submits Letter on HRSA Faculty Loan Repayment Program

November 1, 2002-The AAMC Oct. 31 submitted a letter to the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) commenting on the criteria required for an institution to receive a waiver under the Faculty Loan Repayment Program (FLRP). Under the FLRP, a faculty member may apply for loan forgiveness, and the sponsoring institution must match the award. HRSA has requested suggestions on what type of criteria and documentation should be required to be eligible for a waiver from providing matching funds.

AAMC President Jordan J. Cohen, M.D., expressed support for the program's goal of attracting and retaining health professions faculty from disadvantaged backgrounds. The letter recommends expanding the types of documentation that demonstrate financial hardship to support a waiver request.
