VA Announces Acceptance of AAHRPP IRB Accreditation

November 1, 2002-Department of Veterans Affairs Under Secretary for Health Robert Roswell, M.D., announced Oct. 28 that the VA will accept consolidated accreditations of VA institutional review board (IRB) accreditation, when the IRB has been accredited by the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP) as part of the academic affiliate's accreditation process.

Under the new arrangement, "VA facilities that use the IRB of an academic affiliate that is accredited by AAHRPP will undergo a more limited NCQA survey than VA facilities that maintain an independent IRB. The academic affiliate accredited by AAHRPP will not be required to participate in the NCQA survey." The new policy was announced through a memorandum from Dr. Roswell to all VA network and hospital directors.
