Physician Groups Call on Congress to Sign Pledge to Enact Payment Relief

November 1, 2002-The AAMC medical school deans Oct. 30 were asked to join the American Medical Association (AMA) and physician specialty groups in calling on Congress to sign a pledge to stop reductions in physician payments. Both Senators and Representatives are being asked to sign the pledge, which states "Congress must commit to immediate action" and "bring a bill to the President's desk for signature before Congress adjourns for the year."

The pledge is part of an advocacy strategy to assure that provider relief is on Congress' "lame duck" agenda. Before Congress left Washington to focus on their elections, they scheduled a lame duck session for Nov. 12-14.

The AAMC has asked the medical school deans and their colleagues to intensify the pressure on Congress by increasing the level of physician communications to the House and Senate before the Nov. 5 elections (e.g., visiting, calling, or faxing/emailing letters to every Senator and Member of Congress).
