McClellan Confirmed as FDA Chief

October 25, 2002-Before recessing Oct. 17, the Senate approved by voice vote the nomination of Mark McClellan, M.D., Ph.D., as Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Final approval of the nomination had been delayed due to a "hold" on his nomination resulting from a dispute over unrelated legislation. Dr. McClellan currently serves as President Bush's top health care policy advisor and as a member of the Council of Economic Advisors. The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee unanimously approved his nomination on Oct. 9.
