VA Emergency Preparedness Bill Cleared for the President

October 18, 2002-The House of Representatives Oct. 16 approved legislation (H.R. 3253) to establish 4 new emergency preparedness centers. Site designation of the new centers requires a relationship with a school of medicine, school of public health, and graduate program in epidemiology, among other requirements. The Senate approved the latest version of the bill on Oct. 15.

The centers will be designed to research and develop ways to respond to chemical, biological, explosive and radiological threats to the public. Additionally, the centers will be responsible for creating training programs in this area for physicians, medical students and other providers.
