Bills Introduced to Extend COGME; IOM to Study Health Services Research

October 11, 2002-Senators Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) and Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.) introduced legislation (S. 3083) Oct. 9 to extend the reauthorization of the Council on Graduate Medical Education (COGME) until the end of FY 2003. Congress created COGME in 1986 to provide ongoing assessments of physician workforce trends and recommend appropriate efforts to address identified needs to Congress and the Department of Health and Human Services. The current authorization expired on Sept. 30, 2002.

Senator Frist also introduced Oct. 9 a bill (S. 3084) to authorize an Institute of Medicine (IOM) study on the field of health services research. It directs the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) to contract with the IOM for a report on the adequacy of the organization and financing of health services research for meeting the nation's future information needs. The report would also focus on the federal role and AHRQ's leadership in supporting this research, as well as the role of private foundations and corporations.
