On the Hill

October-Citing the continued ethics controversy surrounding his campaign, Senator Robert Torricelli (D-N.J.) announced Oct. 1 that he would no longer seek reelection in the Nov. 5 election. At press time, it appears former Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D) will replace Sen. Torricelli on the ballot. Sen. Torricelli is a member of the Senate Finance Committee.

Representative Patsy Mink (D-Hawaii) passed away on Sept. 28. Rep. Mink was the ranking member of the House Education and Workforce Subcommittee on 21st Century Competitiveness and a co-sponsor of the "FED Up" initiative that was designed to identify unnecessary or overly burdensome regulations within the federal financial aid programs. A special election has been scheduled for Nov. 30 to elect a candidate to serve out the remainder of Rep. Mink's term in the 107th Congress. Should Rep. Mink win the Nov. 5 election for the 108th Congress, another special election would be held in January.
