House Passes Reauthorization of NHSC, CHCs

October 4, 2002-The House of Representatives Oct. 1 approved by voice vote legislation (H.R. 3450) to reauthorize the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) and Community Health Centers (CHC) programs. H.R. 3450 also provides statutory authority for the Health Communities Access Program (CAP). The Senate passed similar legislation (S. 1533) in April.

Specifically, both the NHSC and CHC programs are authorized through FY 2006. Major changes to the programs include the expansion of the NHSC to include behavioral and mental health providers, and for the CHCs to expand the list of provided cancer screenings. The Health Communities Access Program would provide grants for the purpose of carrying out demonstration projects to improve the effectiveness, efficiency, and coordination of services for uninsured and underinsured individuals.
