Senate Committee Passes Pharmacist Shortage Legislation

September 27, 2002-The Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee Sept. 25 passed the Pharmacy Education Aid Act (S. 1806) that seeks to reduce the nationwide shortage of pharmacists. The bill amends the National Health Service Corps to allow pharmacists to be eligible for scholarships and loans if they agree to work in underserved areas. Additionally, it creates a new program under Title VII of the Public Health Service Act to recruit and retain pharmacy students and faculty.
