House Passes Women's Health
Offices Bill
September 20, 2002-The House Sept. 17 approved legislation
aimed at focusing greater attention on women's health issues
within the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
The bill (H.R.
1784) was passed by the Energy and Commerce Committee
on July 25 and establishes offices of women's health at HHS
and four of its agencies, including the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, the Agency for Healthcare Research
and Quality, the Health Resources and Services Administration,
and the Food and Drug Administration [see Washington
Highlights, June 14]. The bill codifies the offices
that already exist and requires that they coordinate their
efforts to advance women's health.
The Congressional Budget Office estimates that the bill would
cost $27 million in FY 2003 and $144 million from FY 2003
to FY 2007. The Senate companion bill (S.
946) has not seen action, to date.
