House Approves VA Emergency
Preparedness Bill
September 20, 2002-The House of Representatives Sept.
17 approved under suspension of the rules H.R.
3253, the "Department of Veterans Affairs Emergency
Preparedness Act of 2002." An earlier version the bill
passed the House on May 20 and the Senate passed its version
on Aug. 1. The Senate is expected to approve the latest version,
clearing it for the President's signature.
Specifically, the bill authorizes $100 million over five
years to establish four medical emergency preparedness centers
at VA medical centers. One of the requirements for site selection
is an affiliation agreement with a medical school. The legislation
also authorizes the development and dissemination of a series
of model education and training programs on the medical responses
to the consequences of terrorist activities based on programs
established at the F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine of
the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.
