Senate Committee Approves Maternal Health Research Bill

September 13, 2002-The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee passed the Safe Motherhood Act for Research and Treatment (S. 2328) Sept. 5. The measure, sponsored by Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), creates a Department of Health and Human Services Interagency Coordinating Committee on Safe Motherhood and expands research at the National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality on pregnancy-related illnesses and maternal health.

The bill also authorizes $20 million in FY 2003 to expand grants by CDC to states to increase testing for breast and cervical cancer and other preventive screenings. $7.5 million in FY 2003 is authorized for Maternal and Child Health Bureau grants to promote maternal dental health. No action has been taken on the House companion bill (H.R. 4602), sponsored by Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich.).
