Senate Panel Approves NSF
Doubling Bill
September 13, 2002-The Senate Health, Education, Labor
and Pensions Committee Sept. 5 approved legislation (S.
2817) that would reauthorize the National Science Foundation
(NSF) at levels sufficient to double the agency's budget over
five years. Specifically, S. 2817 provides the authorization
of appropriations for the NSF for FYs 2003 - 2007 with specific
funding levels for research and related activities, education
and human resources, major research equipment and facilities
construction, salaries and expenses, and the Office of Inspector
General. The agency is directed to continue programs in information
technology; nanoscale science and engineering; plant genome
research; science and technology innovation partnerships;
mathematics and science education partnerships; the Robert
C. Noyes scholarship program; the science, mathematics, engineering,
and technology talent expansion program; the secondary school
systemic initiative; the experimental program to stimulate
competitive research, and the program to advance the goals
of the Science and Engineering Equal Opportunities Act.
