Senate Panel Approves NSF Doubling Bill

September 13, 2002-The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee Sept. 5 approved legislation (S. 2817) that would reauthorize the National Science Foundation (NSF) at levels sufficient to double the agency's budget over five years. Specifically, S. 2817 provides the authorization of appropriations for the NSF for FYs 2003 - 2007 with specific funding levels for research and related activities, education and human resources, major research equipment and facilities construction, salaries and expenses, and the Office of Inspector General. The agency is directed to continue programs in information technology; nanoscale science and engineering; plant genome research; science and technology innovation partnerships; mathematics and science education partnerships; the Robert C. Noyes scholarship program; the science, mathematics, engineering, and technology talent expansion program; the secondary school systemic initiative; the experimental program to stimulate competitive research, and the program to advance the goals of the Science and Engineering Equal Opportunities Act.
