Clarkson Testifies on VA Affiliations

September 13, 2002-John Clarkson, M.D., senior vice president for health affairs and dean of the University of Miami School of Medicine, testified Sept. 12 on behalf of the AAMC before the President's Task Force to Improve Health Care Delivery for Our Nation's Veterans. Dr. Clarkson also serves on the AAMC's VA-Deans Liaison Committee. His statement summarized the over 50 year relationship between the VA and academic medicine, from the publication of Policy Memorandum Number 2 in 1946 to the present. The major themes of his presentation were the symbiotic relationship between the VA medical centers and their affiliated medical schools, and the need for continued communication between VA and medical school officials. During the question and answer period, the Task Force members focused on concerns about communication between the VISN directors and affiliates, the CARES program, and the potential effects of integrating health care delivery between the VA and Department of Defense.
