Secretary's Council on Public Health Preparedness Named

August 30, 2002- Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) Tommy Thompson Aug. 23 announced the 21 members of the Secretary's Council on Public Health Preparedness. Chaired by D.A. Henderson, M.D., the Secretary's principal science advisor for public health preparedness, the group will "advise the department on appropriate actions to prepare for, and respond to, public health emergencies, including acts of bioterrorism." The group's first meeting was held on Aug. 26 and 27 and covered an agenda including bioterrorism preparedness and response programs, state preparedness programs, lessons learned from last fall's anthrax attacks, research and development efforts, development of new products related to bioterrorism, and public health emergency response planning.
