Senate VA-HUD Bill Includes Increases for VA Medical Care, NSF

August 2, 2002 - The Senate Appropriations Committee July 25 approved its version of the FY 2003 VA, HUD and Independent Agencies Appropriations bill (S. 2797, S.Rpt. 107-222), providing significant increases for VA medical care and the National Science Foundation (NSF). The Senate Appropriations Committee has now approved all 13 appropriations bills.

Specifically, the bill includes $23.89 billion for VA medical care, a $2.56 billion (12.0 percent) increase over FY 2002 (not including the $417 million approved as part of the FY 2002 supplemental appropriations bill which is expected to be signed by the President). The bill also includes $400 million for the VA medical and prosthetics research program, an increase of $29 million (7.8 percent). For the NSF, the bill allocates $5.35 billion, an increase of $564 million (11.8 percent) over FY 2002, including $4.13 billion for NSF Research, an increase of $533 million (14.8 percent).
