Senate Panel to Mark Up HHS Spending Bill

July 12, 2002 - The Senate Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations Subcommittee is tentatively scheduled to mark up its FY 2003 spending bill on July 16 amid speculation that this bill may be tied to the defense appropriations bill. The bill will reportedly go to the full Appropriations Committee on July 18.

There are reports that the Labor-HHS bill will be tied somehow to the defense spending bill to force the White House to either veto the package or accept more funding for programs under the Labor-HHS subcommittee's jurisdiction than had been requested. The President's FY 2003 budget called for $129.9 billion for the Labor-HHS subcommittee. The Senate allocation for the subcommittee is $134.0 billion.

No date has been set for House consideration of the Labor-HHS bill.
