New NIOSH Director Named

June 28, 2002- Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson announced June 21 the appointment of John Howard, M.D., M.P.H., J.D., LL.M., as the new director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), effective July 15, 2002. Dr. Howard has served as chief of the Division of Occupational Safety and Health at the California Department of Industrial Relations since 1991. Dr. Howard received his Doctorate of Medicine from Loyola University and trained in the UCLA Pulmonary Fellowship Program at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. He received his M.P.H. from the Harvard School of Public Health, his J.D. from UCLA, and his LL.M. from George Washington University. Kathleen Rest, Ph.D., M.P.A., who has been serving as acting director of NIOSH will resume her responsibilities as deputy director.
