Senate Democrats Urge IME
Relief
June 21, 2002- In a June 19 letter to Senate Majority
Leader Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) and Senate Finance Committee Chairman
Max Baucus (D-Mont.), twenty-five Senate Democrats called
for Medicare Indirect Medical Education (IME) relief for teaching
hospitals. Stating that teaching hospitals have the lowest
total margins of all hospitals, the signatories wrote "it
is essential that Congress act this year to prevent the upcoming
cut."
Urging that restoration of the IME cuts be included in any
Medicare provider legislation considered by the Senate this
year, the Democrats stated they "have difficulty supporting
any Medicare provider legislation that does not repeal the
IME cut."
"Moreover," the group wrote, "we strongly
urge that the Senate not adjourn this year until this critical
issue of importance to our teaching hospitals and the patients
they serve is adequately addressed."
The letter, which was coordinated by Sen. Richard Durbin
(D-Ill.) was also signed by the following Senators: Biden
(D-Del.), Boxer (D-Calif.), Carnahan (D-Mo.), Cleland, (D-Ga.),
Clinton (D-N.Y.), Corzine (D-N.J.) Dodd (D-Conn.), Edwards
(D-N.C.), Feinstein (D-Calif.), Kennedy (D-Mass.), Kerry (D-Mass.),
Landrieu (D-La.), Levin (D-Mich.), Lieberman (D-Conn.), Lincoln
(D-Ark.), Mikulski (D-Md.), Miller (D-Ga.), Murray (D-Wash.),
Reed (D-R.I.), Sarbanes (D-Md.), Schumer (D-N.Y.), Stabenow
(D-Mich.), Torricelli (D-N.J.), and Wellstone (D-Minn.).
