House Committee Clears Women's Health Bills

June 14, 2002- The House Energy and Commerce Committee June 13 approved the "Women's Health Office Act" (H.R. 1784) and a bill reauthorizing the 1992 Mammography Quality Standards Act (HR 4888). Similar legislation has been introduced in the Senate (S. 946 and S. 2591, respectively.)

H.R. 1784 officially establishes Offices of Women's Health within the Department of Health and Human Services, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Health Resources and Services Administration, and the Food and Drug Administration. The offices would be authorized to direct, develop and coordinate research and programs to advance women's health. The bill would not impose new mandates on the office's existing responsibilities.

H.R. 4888 would reauthorize for five years the mammography standards passed in 1992 to ensure women have access to quality mammography. Facilities providing the screenings would undergo yearly inspections and be recertified every three years.
