VA Announces CARES Phase II

June 14, 2002- The Department of Veterans Affairs June 6 announced the beginning of Phase II of the agency's Capital Asset Realignment for Enhanced Services (CARES) program. Phase I of the CARES initiative was conducted in VISN 12, encompassing the Chicago area, Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Phase II will address the remaining 20 VISNs and is scheduled to be completed within two years.

During the next 18 months, VA will collect data and solicit stakeholder opinions in the development of a national CARES plan. The plan will be evaluated by an independent commission that will be selected this fall and will include representatives from stakeholder groups. The commission will forward its recommendations to the Secretary who will make a final decision in September 2003.
