House Passes NSF Authorization

June 7, 2002- The House of Representatives June 5
overwhelmingly approved legislation (H.R.
4664) to reauthorize the National Science Foundation (NSF)
and increase the agency's budget by 15 percent in each of
the next three years. Sponsored by Science Committee Chairman
Sherwood Boehlert (R-N.Y.), the bill authorizes $5.5 billion
for the NSF in FY 2003, $4.1 billion of which would be reserved
for research and related activities. Similar legislation is
being developed in the Senate.
