House Passes NSF Authorization Legislation

June 7, 2002- The House of Representatives June 5 overwhelmingly approved legislation (H.R. 4664) to reauthorize the National Science Foundation (NSF) and increase the agency's budget by 15 percent in each of the next three years. Sponsored by Science Committee Chairman Sherwood Boehlert (R-N.Y.), the bill authorizes $5.5 billion for the NSF in FY 2003, $4.1 billion of which would be reserved for research and related activities. Similar legislation is being developed in the Senate.
