Final Portion of Bioterrorism
Funds Awarded to States
June 7, 2002- Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary
Tommy Thompson announced
June 6 the approval of state bioterrorism preparedness plans
and the release of the remaining 80 percent of funding to
24 states and 2 cities. Funding for 24 states and one city
is being withheld pending further review and refinement of
portions of the plans. Two states, Washington, DC, and all
eight U.S. territories were given an extension for their plans.
The first 20 percent of the $1.1 billion in state funding
was released Jan. 31, directing all states and 3 cities to
prepare plans for approval by HHS [see
Washington Highlights, Feb. 1]. Of this total,
the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is providing
$918 million to support bioterrorism preparedness activities
statewide, while the Health Resources and Services Administration
is administering $125 million for state to create regional
hospital preparedness plans. HHS has asked states for progress
reports on the implementation of the plans by Oct. 1.
