New MedPAC Commissioners
Announced
June 7, 2002- A former Centers for Medicare and Medicaid
Services (CMS) Administrator and a U.S. Senator are two of
the three new appointments to the Medicare Payment Advisory
Commission (MedPAC). The new Commissioners, appointed by the
U.S. Comptroller General for three-year terms, are:
- Nancy-Ann DeParle, J.D., senior advisor, JP Morgan
Partners, and adjunct professor at the Wharton School
of the University of Pennsylvania. Ms. DeParle served
as administrator of the Health Care Financing Administration
(HCFA) (now CMS) from November 1997 to October 2000.
- David F. Durenberger, president, Public Policy Partners
Inc., and chairman and CEO, University of St. Thomas/University
of Minnesota's National Institute of Health Policy. Mr.
Durenberger (R-Minn.) served in the Senate from 1979 through
1995.
- Nicholas J. Wolter, M.D., CEO, Deaconess Billings Clinic,
Billings, Montana and practicing physician.
In addition, two current commissioners were reappointed for
additional three-year terms: Carol Raphael, president and
CEO, Visiting Nurse Service of New York, and Mary K. Wakefield,
Ph.D., R.N., director, Center for Rural Health, University
of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences.
The new Commissioners succeed the following Commissioners
whose terms expired in April 2002: Beatrice S. Braun, M.D.,
member of the board of directors of AARP; Floyd Loop, M.D.,
CEO, Cleveland Clinic Foundation; and Janet Newport, vice-president
of public policy for PacifiCare Health Systems, Inc.
