NIH Issues Compliance Reminder on Research Involving Recombinant DNA Molecules

May 31, 2002- The National Institutes of Health (NIH) May 28 issued a special notice reminding the research community of the need to comply with the "NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant DNA Molecules" which stipulate biosafety and containment measures for research involving recombinant DNA research and delineate additional requirements for human gene transfer studies.

The notice highlights recent changes to the safety reporting requirements associated with human gene transfer studies and the important roles and responsibilities of the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) in the local review of recombinant DNA research. NIH also reminded institutions that "privately funded projects employing recombinant DNA must adhere to the NIH Guidelines if they are being carried out at, or funded by, an organization that has any NIH contracts, grants, or other support for this kind of research."
