Zerhouni Assumes NIH Directorship

May 24, 2002- Elias A. Zerhouni, M.D., May 20 was sworn in as the 15th director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Dr. Zerhouni was most recently executive vice dean of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, chair of the department of radiology and radiological science, and professor of radiology and biomedical engineering. The Senate confirmed Dr. Zerhouni's nomination on May 2. He replaces Ruth L. Kirschstein, M.D., who has served as acting director of the agency since January 2000.
