House Approves VA Authorizations
May 24, 2002- The House of Representatives approved
legislation to establish four emergency preparedness centers
(H.R.
3253) and build new medical facilities (H.R.
4514) by voice and unanimous votes respectively, on May
20 and 21. H.R. 3253 authorizes $100 million over five years
to establish centers to address chemical, biological and nuclear
threats. Additional sections incorporate provisions from H.R.
3254 which seeks to require the Secretaries of Veterans
Affairs and defense to create model education and training
programs to address similar threats. Similar legislation has
been introduced in the Senate (S.
2132). H.R. 4514 authorizes $285 million for construction
and renovation at 10 medical care facilities.
