House Approves VA Authorizations

May 24, 2002- The House of Representatives approved legislation to establish four emergency preparedness centers (H.R. 3253) and build new medical facilities (H.R. 4514) by voice and unanimous votes respectively, on May 20 and 21. H.R. 3253 authorizes $100 million over five years to establish centers to address chemical, biological and nuclear threats. Additional sections incorporate provisions from H.R. 3254 which seeks to require the Secretaries of Veterans Affairs and defense to create model education and training programs to address similar threats. Similar legislation has been introduced in the Senate (S. 2132). H.R. 4514 authorizes $285 million for construction and renovation at 10 medical care facilities.
