Congress Plans to Rename NIH NRSA Awards for Dr. Kirschstein

May 24, 2002- At a May 22 hearing on the National Institutes of Health's (NIH) activities related to Parkinson's disease, Senate Labor-HHS Appropriations Chairman Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) announced plans to rename the NIH's National Research Services Awards (NRSAs) in honor of NIH Deputy Director Ruth L. Kirschstein, M.D. The designation was the work of Sen. Harkin and Ranking Member Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) and their House counterparts, Chairman Ralph Regula (R-Ohio) and Ranking Member David Obey (D-Wis.). "The Ad Hoc Group and the advocacy community were seeking a way to honor Dr. Kirschstein's brilliant NIH career and commitment to future generations of scientists," said Ad Hoc Group for Medical Research Funding Chairman Richard Knapp, Ph.D. "This is a fitting tribute to Dr. Kirschstein for her service to the nation, and for her recent lengthy tenure as Acting Director of NIH, and we applaud the Congress for providing her this recognition." Sen. Harkin indicated the legislative change would be inserted into the Senate version of the FY 2002 supplemental appropriations bill.
