New Director Named at NIBIB

May 10, 2002 - Acting Director of the National Institutes of Health Ruth Kirschstein, M.D., May 7 announced the appointment of Roderic I. Pettigrew, Ph.D., M.D., as the first permanent director of the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB). Dr. Pettigrew currently serves as professor of radiology, medicine (cardiology) and bioengineering at the Emory University School of Medicine as well as director of the Emory Center for MR Research. Dr. Pettigrew has a B.S. in physics from Morehouse College, an M.S. in nuclear medicine and engineering from Rennselear Polytechnic Institute, a Ph.D. in applied radiation physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and an M.D. from the University of Miami School of Medicine. He did his internship and residency in internal medicine at Emory University and also completed a residency in nuclear medicine at the University of California, San Diego. He is best know for his pioneering work in dynamic three-dimensional imaging of the heart using magnetic resonance. Dr. Pettigrew is expected to formally join the institute in late August or early September.
