New Visa Panel Will Review Applicants Studying Sensitive Topics

May 10, 2002 - The White House May 7 announced plans to establish the Interagency Panel on Advanced Science Security (IPASS) to evaluate visa applications from individuals wanting to conduct research in certain sensitive science and technology fields in the United States. The new panel will provide additional scrutiny to visa applicants based on their previous education and training, country of origin, area of intended study, and the nature of the research. Final decisions on approval or denial of a visa would remain with the Department of State and the Immigration and Naturalization Service. The panel would be comprised of representatives of several government agencies, including the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, the National Institutes of Health, and the National Science Foundation.
