Senate Confirms New NIH Director

May 3, 2002- On May 2, the Senate on a voice vote confirmed Elias A. Zerhouni, M.D., executive vice dean, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, to be the 15th director of the National Institutes of Health. Senate confirmation followed the unanimous approval of Dr. Zerhouni earlier in the day by the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, which had held a confirmation hearing April 30.

Secretary of Health and Human Services Tommy Thompson said Dr. Zerhouni will be "a visionary and innovative leader." In a letter endorsing his nomination, AAMC President Jordan Cohen, M.D., said Dr. Zerhouni was a "talented scientist" who "has proven to be a gifted research administrator." Dr. Cohen also praised acting NIH director Ruth Kirschstein, M.D., saying, "NIH has benefited greatly from her wisdom, dedication and leadership."
